Though I stopped painting for 40 years I continued drawing through all that time. Most of the drawings shown here actually date from the 8-year period in which I lived on the boat and cruised the Caribbean, the small space aboard limiting the size of the work to sketchbook dimensions.
It was in Trinidad, in fact, that I discovered the black sketchbook, which completely turned around my drawing style. On white paper you draw shade, shadows. On black paper you’re actually drawing light. Big difference. I highly recommend getting a black sketchbook and going at it.
When I’m at a music event, if I’m not playing I’m usually drawing. Hence the many musician sketches.
